Knife & Rose
Posted on April 7th, 2008 in Graphic Design, Posters. This is the first in a series of tattoo related designs that I’ll be releasing. This post will also kick off a new category I’m creating, called Posters. I’ll be spending a lot of my design time on some posters that I intend to have printed. For now, they will all be 11×17, with the first couple being some tattoo inspired work. Stay tuned, you may recognize the next one. But, for now, check this one out. It can also be viewed in my portfolio.

Hello, very nice images!
I was just wondering what the actuall meaning of a knife through a rose is? I think that it seems symbolic in some way, i’ve heard that old sailors used to have tattoos of this kind.
Happy for an answer, Pad.

Patrick – Great question…but I really have no idea. I’ve read on some tattoo sites that knives through hearts represent ancient Aztec practices of human sacrifice and that knives through skulls symbolize death. But, my knife through the rose really wasn’t intended to represent anything in particular. Just an image that I liked once I put it together. My designs usually aren’t intended to represent anything or have any hidden meanings. I design for aesthetic reasons almost exclusively.
Thanks for the kind words and I apologize that I don’t have an overly insightful answer for you.

Patrick, i also thought this, as y grandfather has one and got it while in the military (army). i was expecting some meaningful story, but no. he told me that he and a couple of his friends hitched a train to NY in 1946, went to a tattoo shop, put $5 on the counter and told the guy to give him the biggest tattoo he could get.
